The most extensive seal hunt will open today in Canada, allowing the killing of approximately 300 individuals in the coming year, many of them in their first hours of life. The hunting of the young seals for their fur, on the eastern coast of Canada, was stopped about 25 years ago, following an international protest.

Officials in the Canadian government reject the claims of animal protection organizations and explain that it is necessary to resume hunting for humanitarian reasons.

The harsh images of seal pups being killed with sticks in the colonies of Newfoundland and Labrador shocked the world 25 years ago and caused a reduction in hunting. In 1972, the USA imposed a ban on the import of products derived from the hunting of seals and the European Union joined the ban years later.

As a result of the embargo, the Canadian government limited the hunting of seals to only about 15 per year, for local meat and handicraft purposes only. Now with the return of fur to fashion in the world of hunting is renewed. Last year, Canada increased the hunting quota by no less than a million over the next three years, and the number of individuals killed this year is expected to be the highest in decades.

Natural Resources Canada spokesperson John Afford dismissed the claims against the resumption of hunting and said they were largely false. According to him, the hunt is completely humane because the population of seals in the area is exploding and causing the extinction of the fishery, resulting in severe damage to the industry. The BBC reported that the official estimate is that about 5.2 million Harp seals currently live in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The green organizations in Canada claim that the government is trying to turn the seals into "scapegoats" to cover up the failure in the management of the fishing industry. It is also claimed that the hunters are using hunting methods that have been outlawed in Canada such as skinning seals while they are still alive. In recent days, the organizations launched a campaign against the resumption of hunting and issued, among other things, shirts that read "sandwiches instead of seals".
