Another world to discover: Cassini transmitted images of the moon Dune in preparation for the approach in mid-December

The Cassini spacecraft photographed the moon Dione, one of Saturn's largest moons, on October 27, when it was 1.2 million km away from it. Voyager first observed the moon 24 years ago. Cassini is expected to take much better pictures when it passes by in mid-December

A beautiful sight of the moon Dune is revealed to Cassini, with shadowy craters and lines first observed by Voyager 24 years ago. The fine lines will be imaged at higher resolution in mid-December 2004. Subtle changes in brightness cross the surface of the Moon and can be seen here as well. The diameter of Dune is 1,118 km.
The image primarily shows the dune hemisphere facing the side of the moon facing the direction of its orbital motion. The image is rotated so that the north is up.
The image was taken in visible light using Cassini's narrow band camera on October 27, 2004, at a distance of about 1.2 million km from Dune and at a sun angle of 28 degrees. The image is at a resolution of 3.5 km per pixel.
