A basketball competition for robots will be held in Yad Eliyahu

On March 30, the finals of the FIRST robotics competition will take place, during which 26 high schools from around the country will compete in shooting balls with the robots they built

While the Maccabi Tel Aviv players are participating in the Euroleague in Europe, 26 robots will take their place for the competition at the Nokia Yad Eliyahu Hall. As part of the finals of the FIRST robotics competition, 26 schools from around the country will compete with their robots in combined basketball and soccer competitions. The representatives of the schools will reach the finals after six weeks of intensive construction of robots according to exact requirements of the management of the global competition in the USA. The three winning schools will represent Israel in the global competition that will be held in April in Atlanta, USA.

Towards the final, a huge 3-ton installation of the field where the robots will compete will be flown to Israel. The robots will be tested on two main parameters:
• Shooting balls at a target at a height of 3.2 meters using a cannon located on the robot.
• Scoring balls for two goals.

The FIRST competition has been held for 10 years in the USA, and for the second time in Israel. The competition was founded by Dean Kayman to encourage the motivation to study science and technology among the youth. The GM representation in Israel together with the UMI company took it upon themselves to initiate and promote the competition in Israel, in cooperation with the Technion, whose people will also judge the competition under the auspices of the Ministry of Education.
