The warm promises of the Israeli biomed

A first batch of news for the "Biomed-Israel 2007" week gathered from among the 700 companies currently engaged in the field of life sciences in Israel

In preparation for ILSI-Biomed Israel Week 2007, 15 medical innovations representing the vision and unique thinking of the life sciences industry in Israel were gathered. The innovations, in various fields of medicine, constitute a small sample of a large Israeli industry. The annual meeting of all those involved in this industry, which will be held between June 5 and 7, 2007 at the Dan Panorama and David Intercontinental hotels in Tel Aviv, will present the news in the field of life sciences for the coming years. The event will include an exhibition, in which about 150 exhibitors from Israel and the world will participate, accompanying conferences with many guests from abroad, including renowned researchers, representatives of venture capital funds and delegations from giant multinational companies, and at the "Exhibition Conference", the organizing company, anticipates the arrival of 5,000 participants. We have reason for optimism - 15 medical promises prove that the future is already here.

Lenses implanted inside the eyes will eliminate the need for glasses

Lenses that will be implanted inside the eyes

In recent years, cataract surgery has become one of the most common surgeries in the field of ophthalmology. Cataract is a condition in which the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy (mainly due to aging). As a result of the development of cataracts, a decrease in the sharpness or quality of vision is felt, up to the point of blindness. After removing the cataract in a surgical procedure, an artificial intraocular lens is implanted. The intraocular lenses that are used today do not allow the ability to focus and require the patient to wear glasses. In contrast to those, the Herzliya-based NuLens company is developing a focusing intraocular lens, which will allow focusing for the near and far range without the need for glasses. The lens is made of non-toxic biocompatible materials that do not create a chemical or immune reaction inside the eye. The lens is helped by the natural activity of the eye muscle system which is harnessed to change the curvature of the lens. The focusing lens allows focusing at any distance.

Auto-injectors are afraid of syringes

During Biomed week, a new line of automatic self-injectors will be revealed for the first time. These are products in which the needle is hidden at all stages of the injection process (before, during and after the injection), and a simple push of a button automatically activates the insertion of the needle with the medicine. The syringes are designed for use with the latest drugs (biotechnological drugs), which are usually given by self-injection at the patient's home. Among the new products that Elcam Medical will present at the exhibition: a disposable syringe for automatic self-injection, an "automatic needle", designed to be connected to any standard syringe and a "reusable automatic syringe", which uses "cartridges".

And if you are also afraid of the automatic injectors: injecting drugs into the body through the skin

The company TranceFarma has developed a system consisting of a palm-sized device that operates using a battery, and a sticker attached to it that contains the medicine. Place the patch on the skin and lightly press a button on the device to release the medicine through the skin into the bloodstream. The innovative technology allows the creation of microscopic channels in the upper layer of the skin, through which the drugs are released into the bloodstream. The system allows for the delivery of a wide variety of medicines, and recently, the company was included in the list of the top 100 start-up companies in the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
