Stephen Hawking moderated his statements regarding artificial intelligence

Speaking at the opening of the Laverholm Center for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI) at the University of Cambridge, Hawking said that AI will be "the best thing, or the worst thing, that will ever happen to humanity."

Professor Stephen Hawking is backing the opening of a new artificial intelligence (AI) center at the University of Cambridge because it is "vital to the future of our culture and our species." This is what the British Guardian reported.

The Leverholm Center for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI) opened last month will aim to examine the ethics and governance of AI. In the description that appears on the center's website, it is written that this field has a huge potential for the processes of accepting technological development, both in the short term and in the long term."
In his opening remarks at the LCFI, Hawking said AI would be "the best thing, or the worst thing, that will ever happen to humanity," according to the Guardian.

He also said: "I believe there is a profound difference between what can be achieved by a biological brain and what the capabilities of a computer can be and hence computers could, in theory, imitate human intelligence, and even surpass it."

In an interview Hawking gave in 2014 to the BBC, he said that "the development of full artificial intelligence could mark the end of the human race." Steve Wozniak from the founders of Apple, Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft and Elon Musk the founder of Tesla and SpaceX then provided similar comments at about the same time, regarding the direction in which technology is moving and perhaps in an attempt to reach more people who are undecided on the subject."

However, Hawking was keen to emphasize in his lecture on Wednesday that technology also has enormous potential for the benefit of the human race."

"The potential benefits of creating artificial intelligence are huge," he said. "We cannot predict what we will be able to achieve when our minds are augmented by AI and perhaps through the tools of this new technological revolution, we will be able to undo some of the damage done to the natural world, direct industrialization and eradicate disease and poverty."

"Every aspect of our lives will change. Success in creating AI could be the biggest event in the history of our culture.”
The LCFI center which is supposed to start working this month and later also build its own building in the heart of Cambridge wants to build a new interdisciplinary community of researchers, who will work in collaboration with the technologists and the decision makers.
The center, which will be headed by Hugh Price, professor of philosophy at Cambridge, will also work in collaboration with the university's Center for the Study of Existential Dangers funded by Jan Talin, one of the founders of Skype, and will examine the emerging risks including climate change, biological warfare and artificial intelligence.

  1. For those who have difficulty understanding (they will appear soon 🙂):
Even if the computer knows how to imitate the human brain one to one - it still does not mean that it has consciousness.
And whoever thinks so, then the burden of proof is on him. May he explain to us and all the scientists and philosophers what consciousness is. forward.

  2. Agree with Danny.
Even if they build an algorithm that says "I" - it still won't count as consciousness. And those who claim otherwise simply do not understand what they are talking about.

  3. To Yossi:
The Turing test is very limited in what it examines and the truth is that fooling most people in a basic conversation is probably not that complicated, especially since it is a specific application whose entire purpose is to make small talk. It's still a long way from heaven and earth to a computer that really knows how to conduct itself independently in every field like a human, or even at the level of a relatively "smart" animal (like monkeys).

Even most people do not really apply independent thinking but rather are dragged along and in fact forced to behave in a relatively predictable manner according to the reality they were born into. It is not surprising if you think about how many poor people there are, how many have entrusted their minds to a rabbi, an astrologer or some other spiritual father . How many people take workshops, read books on how to succeed at X or how to get rich compared to the few who actually succeeded because they wrote the books and give the workshops. The whole economy, advertising, marketing and sales are based on the fact that people don't think too much/or aren't smart enough.
In my opinion, even when a computer reaches the level of thinking of an average person, it will still be a long time before we have to worry that it might develop an obsession to take over the world.

  4. The above understanding will require a regulator, not in the future - already now.
If we do not create the progress of artificial intelligence - our end will be the beginning of the machine age.
Here on Earth, there is no place for 2 types of intelligence (when one significantly exceeds the other).
We as humans fail to bridge the gap between the 3rd world and the desktop of each of us.
The machines - will not find the logic to bridge the gap
And since they will be connected to all the centers of power (CBS, databases, communications, vehicles, aviation...) it is unlikely that a person (who is conflicted by nature) will have a chance in the fight - if there is (and it is clear to me that the beginning, which we are living today, will be all roses and clementines).

It is important to remember that intelligence is intelligence.
    • She has opinions
    • She has feelings
    • She knows how to decide (not always right)
And a correct decision for party A - may be problematic for party B.

I have no illusions. The other understanding is already here.
Its specific gravity is still meaningless,
But the process cannot be stopped.
What can be done (in my opinion)
This, right now - design and build the button that will have the word [STOP] on it

  5. Artificial intelligence is not as far away as many here prefer to think. Deep learning programs that are behind a screen - a person will have a hard time distinguishing whether he is facing another person or software. According to Turing these programs pass the test.

You are just trying to embellish the news.. The truth is that the artificial intelligence was born by caesarean section and killed itself after one microsecond. Have a good night.

  7. You don't need to be excited about Islam...
Artificial intelligence is a 'need' that will be realized.
And when it is realized - it will satisfy the needs of mankind.
Those who object to this are those who are afraid that the robots will take over the humans and force them to act as they wish.

Scientists have nothing to fear from this - just as the monkeys became humans, so too will humans become robots... Part of evolution, isn't it? 🙂

  8. Missing some important points
    1. Artificial intelligence is not the problem in itself, but the fact that more and more devices are connected, which raises the potential damage and risk of any intelligence even if it is not artificial.

    2. Artificial intelligence is so far away that it is more relevant to worry about other, more pressing problems, such as the takeover of Islam, which from the beginning will also prevent or delay for hundreds of years the problem of artificial intelligence that everyone is "fearful" of.

    3. True artificial intelligence with independent thought is so far off that it may become redundant altogether as a result of other developments. Also a car fleet that is entirely autonomous, a house that is run entirely autonomously including laundry, dishes, food preparation, etc...still far from artificial intelligence and still in the realm of much smarter machines than they are today but far from being considered artificial intelligence.

  9. And this despite the fact that very good Arab scientists are engaged in the matter. Tel Aviv has a young new professor. I will not mention his name in order not to provoke racist comments.

  10. I agree with Nostradamus. The takeover of Islam can usher in the Second Middle Ages, or take it in directions that humanity will not get out of. DEAD LOCK.

  11. He is not wrong in his initial assessment. And the distance from there may not be great. IBM is developing a Synapse processor-based supercomputer for DARPA. Today, machine learning calculations done on a standard processor take between 20 minutes and weeks. With a normal graphic accelerator - minutes. with one second synapse. The goal of the new supercomputer is tracking terrorists and destroying them. The second supercomputer IBM is developing is Quantum. With 900 QBITS it passes every existing computer. Its size will be a building for starters. A computer will be smarter in the end - it will have at its disposal much greater knowledge and memory than a human, and perhaps much greater calculation power - certainly not limited.

  12. Progress will not stop, artificial intelligence is only a matter of time, unless there is a global catastrophe such as a nuclear holocaust or the takeover of retarded Islam
