St. Uni' Bar Ilan: "Oppose regime change in a unilateral procedure"

The members of the Senate of Bar-Ilan University published the minutes of their last meeting to the faculty members. In this context, most of them (70%) expressed their opposition to significant regime changes, in a unilateral procedure, and stated that "there is a necessity in making decisions on regime changes only with as broad an agreement as possible and in-depth discussions". In addition, they called on the university authorities to show flexibility so that female and male faculty members and students could exercise their right to protest and express an opinion.

In the opinion of the majority of the members of the Senate, the legal legislation, if accepted, may have worrisome consequences for the higher education system as well, such as giving weight to political considerations in relation to academic activity or its derivatives without legal intervention. "From Bar-Ilan University's affiliation to the community of research universities in Israel, the Senate considers it important to warn of these consequences."

In a statement, the Senate expressed its opposition to the making of significant regime changes, in a unilateral procedure, and stated that there is a necessity in making decisions on regime changes only with the broadest possible agreement and in-depth discussions. 

The Senate also warned of a negative impact that could be caused as a result of the legislation and the manner in which it was received on the continued cooperation with researchers from abroad and on the winning of international research grants by Israeli researchers, and harm to the position of Israeli scientists in the international science community. He also expressed concern about harming disadvantaged populations, their rights and well-being, as a result of the regime changes. In the process, the senate emphasized Bar-Ilan University's "commitment to safeguarding the rights of individuals and the rights of minority groups in the university and in Israeli society as a whole."

In their letter, the members of the Senate encourage all students and faculty members to get involved in Israeli society, express a variety of opinions and participate in think tanks, while maintaining freedom of expression and protest and while upholding the law. "The Senate recognizes the right of members and members of the academic and administrative staff to participate in protest actions, as well as actions to support changes, and the need for flexibility on the part of the university authorities so that members and members of the faculty and students can exercise their right."
