Project 365 - remove the sombrero

Tammy Plotner and Jeff Barber, Universe Today

Today is Kamiel Flamarion's birthday. He was born in 1842 and became a famous author in the field of astronomy and has original ideas, according to which we are not alone - the idea of extraterrestrial intelligence. And the Flamerion world was more than just the ancestor of the ST project. In 1877, Palamarion discovered her original notes and Charles Messier's catalog in an antique book store. Based on these lists he was able to identify M102 as Dreyer's NGC 5866 and NGC 4594 with M104. Thanks to his hard work on astronomical study and observations, these two holey objects were identified in Monsieur's list.
To locate the two objects it is necessary to wait for the local midnight. Start at the Draconis gland and advance half a fist's width in the direction of the bright star Arcturus until you reach a single star at magnitude 5.2. The 102th magnitude nebula M10 is about one degree north towards Polaris. M104 – The Sombrero Galaxy is a little more than a fistful west of Spica. At a brightness of 8.3 it can easily be seen as a pale spot in binoculars. However, a powerful telescope and a dark sky are required to locate it as its name suggests.
While waiting for the sunrise of these two galaxies, you should enjoy the small meteor shower - Delta Leonid. These slow visitors, entering the atmosphere at a speed of 24 kilometers per second. They seem to originate in the middle of the lion's back. The rate of fall is very slow - 5 meteors per second, but every trajectory of such a meteor is worth watching.
