This Sunday in the morning a partial solar eclipse will be seen in Israel. Anyone who goes outside during these hours, and watches the sun using protective equipment, will be able to see the natural phenomenon.
• The Horizon Community of the Israel Space Agency at the Ministry of Science and Technology invites the general public to an experiential astronomical observation together with the Great Bear guides to observe the solar eclipse with special telescopes and interesting explanations about the phenomenon will also be given. You must register in advance for the event HERE Under the "Open Observation" tab. The event is free only with advance registration.
• The Israeli Astronomical Society will broadcast the eclipse live from the Givatayim Observatory. You can see the broadcast On the Facebook page of the Israeli Space Agency וGivatayim Observatory, And on the site of The Israeli Astronomical Society.

• For those who still want to go to the observatory: the Ilan Ramon Druze Space Center in Kfar Yarka will host an event suitable for the whole family with free entry. The event includes: observation of the sun through glasses and a solar telescope. An explanation of the phenomenon and various scientific activities for the whole family.

The next partial solar eclipse in Israel will be seen in 2027. A total eclipse will not be seen in Israel for the next hundred years.

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is exactly between the Earth and the Sun: it hides the Sun and creates the unique appearance of the eclipse where the Sun is "eaten" by the Moon's shadow. In the case of a total eclipse, in the small area where a total eclipse can be seen, it looks as if the sun has set in the middle of the afternoon. The eclipse that will take place on 21.06.2020 will not be a total eclipse anywhere on Earth, but an annular eclipse. The path of the eclipse will move from Central Africa to South Asia, and the closest point to Israel will be crossing the Red Sea near the Bab El Mandab exits, which connect it to the Indian Ocean. But as mentioned, since the eclipse happens to fall when the moon is in the farthest part of its orbit around the earth, the shadow of the moon will not be able to hide all the light from the sun, and there will be a ring of light around the circle of darkness.

Since the intensity of the sun's illumination is very great, those who do not look with special means, such as eclipse glasses, will not notice the phenomenon at all. Only those who look with special protective means will be able to notice "that someone has eaten the sun".

pay attention! Do not look at the sun directly without approved protective measures. Do not point telescopes or binoculars directly at the sun. Direct viewing of the sun can cause blindness.
