The International Chemistry Olympiad has ended: the Israeli delegation, trained at the Technion, won two medals: silver and bronze
Israeli pride - Two of the four representatives of Israel won silver and bronze medals yesterday at the International Chemistry Olympiad, which took place during the past week in the city of Tbilisi, Georgia. The four students who were trained and trained in the last months at the Shulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion are: Ron Solan from Rashonim High School Herzliya who won a silver medal, Rina Sebastianov from Makif C in Ashdod who won a bronze medal, Ofir Shmol from the Israel High School for Sciences and Arts in Jerusalem and Guy Harduf from Rashonim High School Emek Harod.

The International Chemistry Olympiad, which has been held for the 48th year, is the oldest of the international science Olympiads for high school students. This year the Olympics were held in the city of Tbilisi, Georgia, with the participation of 264 students from sixty-six countries. The academic challenge that the students faced in the competition included a theoretical test and a laboratory experiment, during which the students were required to synthesize a substance, conduct kinetic monitoring after a chemical reaction and identify unknown substances based on chemical reactions.
The delegation was accompanied and trained by Zeev Gross, professor at the Shulich Faculty of Chemistry and head of the youth chemistry programs at the Technion and Dr. Iris Barzilai - the engineer of the analytical chemistry laboratory. During the training, the delegation was prepared by the main trainer, Dr. Izna Nigel-Ettinger, for the administration and logistics, which was assisted by Ms. Mira Katz, the director of youth projects at the faculty. The team members also received a lot of assistance from faculty members, doctoral students and laboratory engineers at the Shulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion.

"The material on which the team members were tested was at a very high level, many steps beyond what is taught in high schools in Israel," says Professor Gross. "The four members of the Israeli team are the most outstanding among the thousands of students who participated in the selection process. The students went through intensive preparatory camps to bring them to the desired level. To our delight, two members of the delegation - Ron and Rina - won medals, which is a great pride."
