I hope that from now on this event will be an annual event. This is what the Swedish Ambassador to Israel Robert Rodberg ((Rydberg) said on Thursday evening. Rodberg hosted the Nobel Prize winners, Prof. Avraham Hershko and Prof. Aharon Chachanover, as well as Technion executives and representatives from various economic bodies, at his home in Herzliya Pituach, on the eve of their departure for the ceremony in Stockholm.

Ambassador Rodberg greeted those present in almost perfect Hebrew, even though he has only been in office for about a year and a half: I would like to congratulate Research Professor Avraham Hershko and Research Professor Aharon Chachanover. I had the honor to visit the Technion three times already and congratulate the winners and the institution for winning. You are welcome guests and good representatives of Israel.

The Minister of Science (for four days only) Viktor Brailovsky said: "I hope that from now on the members of the Swedish Academy of Sciences will start the tradition of awarding the prize to Israeli scientists. We have good candidates.

Prof. Hershko contented himself with thanking the ambassador for his support and for taking the trouble to come every few days to the Technion. Prof. Chachanover said that he is already looking forward to a successful event and that today's event was a prelude to the expected busy week in Stockholm. "We hope that we will represent the Technion, the State of Israel and the Jewish people with respect. Prof. Chachanover told about a recent visit he made to the Jewish community in Greece and that the Jews around the world are very excited and proud that scientists from Israel have won the Nobel Prize.

The two winners of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Professors Avraham Hershko and Aharon Chachanover from the Rapaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion, are leaving on Sunday to receive the prestigious award in Stockholm. The two award winners are accompanied by their families and close friends.

"Nobel Week" in Stockholm will be full of events, including press conferences, receptions and lectures by the laureates at Stockholm University. On Wednesday, members of the Israeli delegation will light a Hanukkah candle, together with Stockholm's rabbi, Meir Hordan, Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Avi Menor, and members of the Jewish community. All 11 recipients of the Nobel Prize for 2004 were invited to the candle lighting ceremony.

The prize distribution ceremony will take place on Friday, December 10, and immediately afterwards a gala dinner will be held.

On Thursday, the Swedish ambassador to Israel, Robert Rydberg, held a festive reception for the two grooms, their families, the heads of the Technion and the Rapaport Faculty of Medicine, and the outgoing Minister of Science, Viktor Brilovsky, who said to the laughter of those present: My speech will be short, before the end of my term.
