The research group led by Prof. Aharon Chachanover, a Nobel laureate, is working on understanding the self-degradation mechanism of the ubiquitin protein and developing additional anti-cancer drugs. This was stated today in Prof. Chachanover's lecture, which took place today, on the occasion of receiving an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University.

Prof. Chachanover was the first in the world to discover a unique mechanism for breaking down proteins in the living cell. It is a complex protein system that includes the protein ubiquitin and other active units. This system enables the selective breakdown of the cell's proteins and is designed to preserve its normal way of life, in addition to the cellular secretion mechanism that was known until now.

"The ubiquitin system, which breaks down intracellular proteins in a selective manner, started out as a theory that no one believed in and today is an iron sheep asset to both the scientific and medical community. The discovery caused a breakthrough in the field of medicine with the development of a more effective drug than currently available for the terminal disease multiple myeloma." Chechenover said these things in front of hundreds of researchers and scientists from around the country who crowded the congress center in Bar Ilan where his lecture was held. The revolutionary discovery earned Chechenover and his colleague Prof. Avraham Hershko, both from the Technion in Haifa, the Nobel Prize in 2004. As you remember, the discovery is shared.

The president of Bar Ilan University, Prof. Moshe Keva, who was present at Herza, said that "Prof. Chachanover represents the State of Israel in a Zionist and Jewish way that inspires pride and is an example and a symbol. His fight for education and science in Israel is helping us save the higher education system in Israel."

The lecture was attended by Prof. Kent Hochberg, Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences, Prof. Haim Breitbert, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, and Prof. Haim Soknik, Head of the Department of Chemistry.

  1. His achievements are tremendous, well done!
Who will give and thanks to him, and thanks to people like him,
will finally come to crack the code, to cure cancer,
that picks up everything in its path,
Regardless of age, origin, race... marital status and the like!

  2. I heard and saw the prof. Today on Rino Zrur's show. I enjoyed it very much and was inspired. The eloquence of speaking at eye level is amazing. And yes, the education... I wish there was someone who would listen and Japanese. Thanks to him, I was filled with hope and faith that I had already lost. Let's hope...

  3. Well done to him!
His researches and discoveries earned the whole world a lot of knowledge!
They credited me with working on it.
    =)

  4. Sahtain for the award...
I'm just learning about you at school so I needed sources of information...
So now I want to respond…
First of all, very nice for receiving the Nobel Prize!!! Applause to you!!!!
We are all proud of you lol...
    An exemplary scientist….
I wish I had lol... just...
But I have to point out that it doesn't interest me that much, I don't even care at all... without insulting you...
Well now I have to fly bye!

  5. I wish there would be more discoveries in the State of Israel
More resources should be devoted to science and not to programs
    Having a "rating"...
